Project Overview

Background

Transaction Reports give customers the ability to view a clear summary of their latest account activity directly within the ANZ App. Customers can generate a report for a selected number of days, allowing them to easily track spending patterns, review recent payments, and keep on top of their finances without needing to wait for a monthly statement.

Project Overview

Problem Context

Customers often require interim statements for urgent needs such as visa, loan, rental, or Centrelink applications, yet the ANZ app does not currently support accessing them in real time. Instead, requests must go through the call centre or Internet Banking, taking 3–5 business days by mail, or require a branch visit for a printout. This outdated process is both inconvenient and costly, with over 400,000 annual requests creating $30,000+ in manual processing costs and delays of 2–7 days. Meanwhile, other major banks already provide instant digital access, leaving ANZ customers at a clear disadvantage.

Lack of Real-Time Access

Customers cannot request or receive interim statements instantly through digital self-service channels.

Inconvenient and Outdated Process

Requests currently go through the contact centre or Internet Banking with a 3–5 business day mail turnaround, or require visiting a branch for an immediate printout.

High Demand, Critical Use Cases

Customers frequently need interim statements for critical situations, making timely access essential.

Manual and Costly Process

Manual handoffs across teams create unnecessary costs and delays, leaving customers waiting days for delivery.

Project Overview

Solution

The app will introduce digital transaction reports that allow customers to generate interim statements in real time. This enables users to instantly access a clear record of their recent account activity, without waiting days for delivery or visiting a branch. By providing reports on-demand, the feature improves convenience, reduces reliance on manual processes, and brings ANZ in line with competitors who already offer this capability.

Incoming Payment Notifications

Users receive real-time notifications for deposits like salaries or transfers.

Outgoing Payment Notifications

Every purchase, transfer, or bill payment triggers an instant alert.

Customisable Notification Settings

Users can set thresholds or choose which transactions trigger alerts.

Part Two

Research & Validation

Research & Validation

Competitive Analysis

Secondary research was conducted to review how other major banks design and deliver transaction reports and interim statements. The analysis revealed consistent patterns in where these features are located, how they are distinguished from official statements, and the varied terminology used across different banks. These findings highlighted important considerations for both usability and clarity within the ANZ app.

Placement Within Statements

Competitors consistently located transaction reports under the Statements section of their apps or Internet Banking platforms. This aligns with customer expectations and makes the feature easy to find.

Differentiation of Statement Types

Banks used visual or textual treatments to clearly separate interim statements from official account statements. This included the use of banners, labels, or disclaimers to reduce confusion for users.

Naming Conventions

There is no universal naming approach across banks. Terms such as Proof of Balance, Transaction Summary, and Interim Statement are used, highlighting the need for ANZ to adopt a clear and consistent label that resonates with customers.

Research & Validation

Iteration #1 - App

Based on the secondary research, a rough tappable mock-up was created to let users interact with the proposed solution during testing. This allowed the team to observe real behaviours, validate assumptions, and gather feedback on the core experience before progressing to high-fidelity designs.

User Testing

User interviews were conducted to test the first iteration of the transaction report feature. The goal was to evaluate whether users could easily discover the feature and clearly understand its purpose.

User Testing - Results

In user testing, participants were shown an sample email from Centrelink, and then asked to navigate their way through the prototype to provide the requested documents.

What worked well

  • Users went to the right place to look for it, they easily navigated to the statement screen.

  • Users liked the PDF for the simple and clean design, and they were able to easily grasp the information it conveyed.

What didn’t work well

  • Upon landing on the statements screen, users overlooked the new feature and went straight to the monthly statements under Transaction Report.

  • Most users don’t know what a Transaction Report is, they didn’t know the latest statement doesn’t always include the latest transactions.

  • User's didn't understand what "recent" transactions in the report meant.

Research & Validation

Iteration #2

Based on the results of user testing, the feature was iterated and refined to address usability issues, enable better understanding of the feature, and better align with customer needs.

Change #1: Introduced ‘Recent’ header to reduce confusion between transaction report & monthly statement.

Change #2: Added a new intro screen for Transaction Reports to explain what they are and help users better understand their purpose.

Change #3: New business requirement to allow users to exclude residential address for privacy.

Change #4: Added a title row to the Transaction Report and updated the T&Cs to reflect legal requirements.

Results & Reflection

Results

Transaction Reports give customers the ability to generate and share up to 120 days of recent transactions for their deposit and loan accounts within the ANZ App in under a minute. First released in December 2024 for deposit accounts and expanded in February 2025 to include loan accounts.

Usage (as of 30 Jun 2025):

Used by 381,000 customers

820,000+ Transaction Reports generated

88% of Transaction Reports were generated for deposit acccounts, 12 % for loan accounts

Key Learnings

Clarity Through Language and Structure: Working on transaction reports highlighted the importance of clear labelling and information hierarchy. I learnt that terminology such as interim statement, transaction summary, or recent statements can easily confuse users, so choosing the right language and grouping was critical to ensure users understood the feature immediately.

Balancing Detail with Usability: Designing transaction reports required balancing the level of information shown with the need for simplicity. Too much detail made the report overwhelming, while too little reduced its usefulness. I learnt to prioritise the most relevant details and create a format that was comprehensive yet easy to read and navigate.

User Control and Privacy: This feature also emphasised the importance of user control in design. Giving users the ability to customise the report period and exclude personal details such as their residential address taught me how design decisions directly impact both usability and privacy.

Results & Reflection

Next Steps

The Transaction Report feature has been released in the ANZ app, with the following steps planned to enhance it further.

Introduce Longer and Custom Date Ranges

Currently, Transaction Reports are limited to fixed periods of 30, 60, 90, or 120 days. The next step is to allow customers to generate reports for longer periods as well as select their own custom date ranges for greater flexibility.

Release for Other Product Types

Transaction Reports are limited to certain account types. The next step is to extend availability to other product types such as term deposits, credit cards, and commercial cards, which currently cannot generate transaction reports.
